How many Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEF) are there?

There are three Marine Expeditionary Forces (MEF) currently established within the United States Marine Corps. Each MEF is a combined arms task organization that contains elements of ground, air, and logistics support, capable of operating independently. The three MEFs are designed to provide rapid response to crises and are stationed at different locations: I MEF is based in California, II MEF is located in North Carolina, and III MEF is situated in Japan. This structure enables the Marine Corps to project power globally and support a variety of missions, ranging from humanitarian assistance to full-scale combat operations.
